End of Summer by Kathi Dugan
In the year I had my Open Heart Surgery (no worry- just a mitral valve repair!) I entered the hospital toward the end of August. It was still then summer in full force. By the time I got out of the hospital and had recuperated enough to be up and about without my family watch-keepers, autumn had set in. One afternoon, stepping out onto our front porch to rest on the lounge chair and soak up the last of the sun's rays, wrapped in a soft blanket against the chilly breeze , I noticed my daughter's bright pink flipflops abandoned near the staircase, covered with blown pine needles and darkened, withered leaves. Suddenly I felt sharply my loss of the season's change. The forgotten sandals, remnants from summers closing time, silently and poignantly spoke to me of what I had missed. Their symbolism inspired the painting. I will never look at this painting without remembering that time and that momentary strength of melancholy.
