Colonna Of Inarime by Kathi Dugan
The young bride Colonna, as inspired by Henry W. Longfellow's poem " Vittoria Colonna", as depicted by the artist, is still longingly surveying the ocean's horizon for her beloved's return. Long after her demise from a broken heart, her love allows her no rest. She seeks him still, pacing the grounds of her crumbling castle and traveling down to the rocky shores where the waves lap the sand and toss their secret treasures against the rocks.
"Colonna of Inarime" came into being one day when my granddaughter gave me an unexpected call. "Mimi"' she said, "you haven't painted me for awhile. Why don't you pick me up? I'll bring a change of clothes. We can go to the beach and I'll model for you!" "Okay"' I replied, happy for the opportunity to spend some quality time with her. At the beach Jenna gave me a variety of poses in a mix of summer outfits. Some shots proved to be very usable. This particular pose immediately ignited the portrayal of a distraught young girl, gazing out to sea, straining for a sign of her beloved's return. During the year that followed, I mused over the image but I did not yet have a clear enough picture of its story, thus I was hindered from beginning.. Searching for a Valentines poem early one February, I was flipping through the pages of a book, and "Vittoria Colonna" caught my eye. The hauntingly sad poem gave me all the details and direction I needed to complete the story. It was time to pick up the brush and begin!
