"Ryan: I'll Be Waiting For You" by Kathi Dugan
Ryan's Dad and Mom first approached me during a 4th Floor Artist's Open Studio Event. My painting of my grandson in "Child's Play" had touched them and caused them to simultaneously realize that they desired to have a portrait painted posthumously of their 12 yr old son, Ryan. Ryan had been struck and killed by a car while retrieving mail from a mailbox, across the street from his parent's home. For usage as my primary reference, Ryan's parents choose this photo of him, taken as he was departing on a trip by train. His mom requested that the highlights on the leather chair behind him be worked into a resemblance of angel wings. I was asked to change the color of his shirt from navy blue to red. For an additional touch, I changed the background scenery and added a hint of an angel wing in the lower right hand corner of the train's window. Ryan is crossing over to paradise where he will be joyfully waiting in expectation for his loved ones to come and join him some day. The painting of Ryan was an emotional and moving experience for all involved.
