I have always admired this statue, found in Brewster Gardens, Plymouth Ma. Her expression reveals fortitude, determination and courage, in the face of adversity. The Bible in her hand inspired her with hope and faith. As I considered the character of the Pilgrim Maid, I wondered at the qualities that enabled her to persevere and continue to survive and flourish in this strange new land. The qualities of this woman, framed behind her by descriptions and scriptures, are truly an American inheritance.
