Jesse and The Magic Mushrooms by Kathi Dugan
A teenage boy relaxes from his skateboarding under a magic mushroom, on Fantasy Hill. Surrounding him are some of his favorite things, which other mushroom personalities are making good use of. The sun is shining, the air is cool and life is enjoyable!
How the painting came to be:
Jesse and his mom visited my studio during 4th Floor Artists Open Studios. Jesse was taken by the portrait hanging in my studio, "Natalie: Shelter from the Storm" and he expressed a desire to have a similar portrait done of himself. His mom paid me a secret return visit at a later date, with the goal of making Jesse's wish come true in time for his birthday. I was given a photo of Jesse, hanging out on a hillside, to use as the model in this portait. She asked that I include very specific items of Jesse's in the painting: his skateboard, blue bike, electric guitar, "Awake" bracket, Nike sneakers, Red Sox Hat, plaid shirt and his black kitten. A fantasy painting was the only way to make sense in placing all of these items together on one grassy slope. The result? : A very fun and fanciful portrayal!
Surprise portraits make great gifts! If you have someone for whom you would like a special surprise created, just for them, please do not hesitate to contact the artist. Kathi Dugan is happy to accept commissions.
